A man landed gyrocopter in front of the U.S. Capitol around 1:30 pm on Wednesday, the same day that a Florida mail carrier said he was planning to pull such a stunt in order to promote reform of campaign finance laws.
Doug Hughes, who works as a mail carrier in Ruskin, Florida, told the Tampa Bay Times that he wanted to land his gyrocopter on tax day and deliver letters to Congressmen urging them to take action on campaign finance. He was apparently undeterred by the fact that flying a vehicle so close to the Capitol would violate federal law.The gyrocopter in front of the Capitol was decorated with the markings of the U.S. Postal Service, suggesting that Hughes went through with his plan.
Dozens of members of the Capitol Police responded almost immediately, with more than fifty officers working to tape off the area where the gyrocopter landed while emergency vehicles swarmed about. The man piloting the craft was swiftly spirited away, put the craft is still in place and passerby are being kept away.
