Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders will announce Thursday that he plans to seek the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination in 2016.
Sanders will become the second announced Democrat in the race, presenting the first official challenge former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton. The independent who describes himself as a “democratic socialist” has become a favorite of progressive activists for his denunciations of big banks and the financial elite.
He has urged Clinton to speak out strongly about issues related to income inequality and climate change in the run-up to his announcement. He also recently mocked Clinton for lying about her grandparents being immigrants.
Sanders may end up serving as the most prominent voice for the left wing of the party — particularly to voters who are suspicious of Clinton’s ties to Wall Street.
