Morgan Freeman Says It’s Time For Full Marijuana Legalization

Academy Award-winning actor Morgan Freeman thinks marijuana in the United States should be legalized across the board.

This isn’t the first time Freeman has spoken about his preference for the drug, saying “never give up the ganja” in a 2003 interview with The Guardian. According to Freeman, his first wife told him about marijuana, and ever since then, he’s been a prolific user.

But around seven years ago, Freeman’s 1997 Nissan Maxima skidded across a highway in Mississippi and flipped several times, leaving him with a shattered shoulder, arm and elbow, BBC reports.

After all this time and a four-hour operation to repair nerve damage, he still hasn’t been able to make full use of his left hand and needs to wear a compression glove to stop blood pooling.

“I have fibromyalgia pain in this arm, and the only thing that offers any relief is marijuana,” Freeman told The Daily Beast.

“How do I take it? However it comes! I’ll eat it, drink it, smoke it, snort it!” Freeman added.

Besides fibromyalgia, Freeman says marijuana is useful in many different ways and is an enthusiastic supporter of legalization, pointing to the fact that marijuana can help bring down grand mal seizures in children to a point where it’s possible to have a decent life.

Support for marijuana is consistently on the rise. Recent polling indicates 63 percent of U.S. adults support medical marijuana in their state. (RELATED: Poll: Overwhelming Support For Medical Marijuana On 4/20)

Another poll in March found 63 percent support for marijuana legalization, beating the 2013 record of 58 percent. Based on data from the Benenson Strategy Group, 72 percent of voters don’t approve of jail time for marijuana possession, preferring a simple fine as low as $25 dollars. Republicans, traditionally opposed to marijuana, have slowly been coming around, with 48 percent in the Benenson poll registering support for legalization. Fifty-two percent remain against legalization.

In comparison, Freeman noted that in terms of alcohol, “[m]aybe if you have one drink it’ll quiet you down, but two or three and you’re fucked.”

In the United States, marijuana has been legalized in Washington, Oregon, Colorado and Alaska. To Freeman, this means that the legalization movement is exploding in popularity.
