Two Somali-Americans from Minnesota allegedly used more than $1,000 in federal college financial aid to purchase tickets to the Middle East to fight alongside terrorists.Hamza Ahmed, 20, and Hanad Mustafe Musse, 19, were charged with allegations of conspiracy to support terrorism and financial fraud charges for abusing their student loan funds to purchase airline tickets.
Ahmed and Musse bought airline tickets on Nov. 8, 2014, from New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport to Europe, using more than $1,000 in federal college financial aid.
Ahmed used his aid money to purchase a flight to Istanbul, Turkey, authorities say. Musse used similar funds to buy a ticket to travel to Greece. The pair then planned on heading to Syria From those two destinations.
Ahmed had actually boarded his flight when he was he was apprehended by U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents.
Ahmed and Musse are reportedly among seven Somali-Americans from Minnesota who have been charged with planning to travel to Syria to fight alongside ISIS.Send this to a friend
