‘Very Suspicious’ Fire Kills Four In Home Of DC Socialite, CEO

Police in the District of Columbia found four bodies in the burning home of a corporate CEO Thursday and are calling the circumstances surrounding the event “very suspicious.”

The fire was reported around 1:30 p.m. in an upper class neighborhood just down the street from the vice president’s official residence in northwest D.C. It took firefighters about 30 minutes to put it out.

When they did, they found the bodies of three adults and one child on the second floor of the home, though the identities of the deceased were not released, Fox News reported.

Family members told The Washington Post the home was owned by Savvas and Amy Savopoulos. Savvas Savopoulos, 46, is a corporate executive at American Iron Works, a Maryland-based building materials manufacturer, and his wife is very active in Washington society and fundraising circles.

Savvas is also listed as a representative at a Maryland law firm, and his Facebook page says he is in charge of a hedge-fund management company. He was slated to start a new job in Puerto Rico soon.

A housekeeper that worked for the family told WTTG she was at the house Wednesday, and that another housekeeper spent the night at the house with the couple and their 10-year-old son. The couple also has another daughter, a senior at a Pennsylvania boarding school, who was not at the house at the time of the fire.

The house keeper said she received a text from Amy Savopoulos Thursday morning telling her not to come in to work that day because the family was sick, but when she called to confirm the text message, no one answered the phone.

During a press conference at the scene of the fire, D.C. police chief Cathy Lanier said a blue 2008 Porsche was seen leaving the home around 10:30 a.m. Thursday morning, just hours before the fire was reported.

Lanier said detectives were trying to track the movements of the car before it was found abandoned in Maryland around 5 p.m. Thursday and that movements during those hours could help with the investigation.

She added that there were no signs of forced entry into the home.
