Former DC Mayor Under Federal Investigation May Run For City Council

Former District of Columbia Mayor Vincent Gray has been under federal investigation for five years, but that didn’t stop him from running for mayor again in 2014, and it may not stop him from running for City Council next year.

In a Monday radio interview on WPFW 89.3 FM with Chuck Thies, his former campaign manager, Gray said running for office wasn’t on his “to-do list” but he hadn’t ruled anything out.

“I have ruled nothing out; I have ruled nothing in,” Gray said of a possible bid for the D.C. Council seat opening up next year.

Gray was similarly withdrawn when Thies asked him about allegations that he ran a $660,000 “shadow campaign” in 2010 funded by illegal donations.

Gray said there was “nothing” new happening with the investigation, according to NBC4 Washington.

Prosecutors say Gray had extensive knowledge of the scheme by local businessman Jeffrey Thompson to funnel more than $600,000 into his mayoral campaign, though they have yet to prove Gray’s involvement, and Gray maintains his innocence.

Ronald Machen, the U.S. attorney who launched the investigation into Gray in 2011, resigned his post in March amid the revelation of flaws in the system city police use to provide prosecutors with case details.

Upon resignation, Machen rejoined his former firm, WilmerHale, as a white collar defense attorney.
