• NAACP President Falsely Portrayed Herself as African-American

A part-time college professor, civil rights activist and NAACP leader in northwest Washington state is under fire for allegedly making false claims regarding her race and ethnicity.

Rachel Dolezal, President of the Spokane chapter of the NAACP and professor of African Studies, said she found a threatening package in the NAACP’s post office box in February that contained racist messages and death threats.

The city of Spokane later sent out a press release stating that it was the ninth hate crime Dolezal had experienced.

Yet, postal workers told police that the only way the letter could have gotten into the box was if it had been placed there by a post office employee or by someone who had the P.O. Box key because the envelope was not time-stamped or canceled.

Dolezal told the station she would never falsify something so serious, but the investigation has raised questions beyond who made the threats.

Ruthanne and Larry Dolezal say they want people to know the truth about their daughter, Rachel, including that she is Caucasian.  They say she has been deceiving people by falsely portrayed herself as black and her ancestry is Czech, Swedish and German.

Her father Larry says she might be pretending to be black because “she has over the past 20 years assimilated herself into the African American community through her various advocacy and social justice work.”

He went on to say that Rachel cut off all communication with him and her mother, and “doesn’t want us visible in the Spokane area in her circle because we’re Caucasian.”

Dolezal identified herself as “African-American” in government and official records, but she wouldn’t go into detail about if about her race when contacted by the media.

“That question is not as easy as it seems,” she said after being contacted at Eastern Washington University, where teaches Africana Studies. “There’s a lot of complexities … and I don’t know that everyone would understand that.”

“We’re all from the African continent,” she added.
