• DC Metro Red Line To Close This Weekend For Construction

The Red line of the DC Metro will be closed between NoMa and Farragut North for two days this weekend for Emergency Call Box replacement.

Buses will replace trains on the Red Line from 12 a.m. Saturday through 3 a.m. Sunday between NoMa-Gallaudet and Farragut North, Metro announced. The shutdown is part of a larger $5.5 million project to install new rail, ties, platforms, escalators, signals, lighting and communication systems– the largest expenditure on the system since it was built in the 1970s. (RELATED: DC Metro Gave Away Bike Locks As Its Train Stations Burned)

D.C. is considering abandoning another expensive project aimed at connecting the city via streetcars. After dumping $190 million over 10 years into the project to put trains on a 2.2 mile stretch of track on H Street, the city may have to scrap the project entirely for safety reasons. The trains are currently running but cannot be ridden by the public
