The headline just about says it all on this one. Over half of the new driver’s licenses issued in California during in the past year have been handed out to illegal immigrants.
“Of the 759,000 total licenses the DMV has issued, 397,000–or 52 percent–have gone to illegal,” The Sacramento Bee reports. The recent surge in illegal with licenses is thanks, in large part, to AB 60–a California law that passed in January that allows applicants to get a license by “only proving their identity and California residency, rather than their legal presence in the state.”
The California DMV was slammed as floods of illegal immigrants poured in to register for a driver’s license. Like most, this highway to hell was paved with good intentions.
Long wait times and even longer lines are the result of unintended consequences of the bill’s original intent. When debated, AB 60 was supposed to encourage “1.4 million applicants over three years,” according to The Sacramento Bee. But in reality, the state has already processed “nearly half a million” applications in the first six months of 2015–far-exceeding expectations.
California officials are said to be counting on making millions in new illegal immigrant driver registration fees to help bring down the state’s multi-billion dollar deficit.
