• Helicopter Descends On Home Of Man Charged With Trying To Help ISIS

Another man has been arrested for ties to the Islamic State, this time in New York.

Authorities arrested Arafat M. Nagi, 42, of Lackawanna, N.Y., Wednesday morning and charged him with attempting to provide material support to ISIS. Authorities say he tried to recruit Americans, bought military gear, and traveled to Turkey twice to help ISIS.

He is set to appear in court Wednesday on the charge of attempting to help a designated foreign terrorist organization. Authorities were reportedly alerted to the man as a threat by someone who heard him talking about jihad.

Neighbors told WTHITV News that they heard a helicopter above their normally quiet neighborhood Wednesday morning during the arrest.

According to the criminal complaint, Nagi purchased included body armor, a machete, night vision goggles, combat shirt and pants, and kevlar tactical gloves. He also purchased an Islamic headband and ISIS flag.

In several conversations documented by the Feds, Nagi promoted ISIS beliefs and repeatedly discussed his support of them. For example, he said the burning of the captured Jordanian pilot was justified.

“Our continuing fight against international terrorism today returns to Western New York,” U.S. Attorney William  Hochul said in a statement.  “As alleged, Arafat Nagi pledged allegiance to the Islamic State and the leader of this terrorist organization.  After buying military combat gear, he traveled twice to Turkey in an effort to help the group.  Thanks to the combined efforts of law enforcement and community members, this defendant is no longer capable of achieving his goal of joining the most despicable group of our time.”
