After weeks of intense debate, the South Carolina legislature has voted overwhelmingly to remove the Confederate flag from the statehouse grounds. The vote was said to be easy because of the passionate speech given by South Carolina State Representative Jenny Horne.
“I cannot believe that we do not have the heart in this body to do something meaningful such as take a symbol of hate off these grounds on Friday,” Horne shouted from the podium.Interestingly enough, the first and only President of the Confederate States of America Jefferson Davis is Jenny Horne’s ancestor.
“I will not vote to amend this bill today. We may visit this another session, another year, but if we amend this bill, we are telling the people of Charleston, ‘We don’t care about you,'” she yelled as the tears rolled down her cheek. “Remove this flag, and do it today, because this issue is not getting any better with age.”
After 13 hours of debate, South Carolina lawmakers voted– 94-20–to remove the Confederate battle flag from statehouse grounds.
This, just as Republicans in the U.S House of Representatives took up an amendment loosening restrictions on the Confederate flag’s use on specified federal lands.
South Carolina was rocked last month when nine people worshipping at church were slaughtered by a nut job claiming to want to start a race war in America, thus sparking a nationwide debate over the use of the Confederate flag in public spaces.Republican Governor of South Carolina Nikki Haley will sign the bill removing the flag from courthouse grounds into law on Thursday.
