• ‘Lone White Male’ Walked Into a ‘Gun Free’ Louisiana Movie Theater, Went on a Killing Spree

At the time of this article’s publishing, there are two dead and seven people injured after John Russell Houser shot at random in a movie theater in Lafayette, Louisiana.

About 25 tickets, including the shooter’s, were sold for the 7 o’clock showing of Trainwreck where Houser went on his killing spree.

Authorities don’t have a motive. And the press is probably breaking their necks tripping over each other to find some connection to whatever they can describe as evidence of him being a Tea Party member.

Oh, the media would love to lay this tragedy at the feet of right-wingism. And they are likely still celebrating the fact that the killer has an anglo name.

Our hearts break for the families and friend of the dead. And we wish for a swift recovery for the wounded. No one should have to die while trying to watch and enjoy a romantic comedy.

But let it be known that this movie theater, much like the one in Aurora Colorado that was shot up in 2012, is a gun free zone.

It wouldn’t be a straight to assume that this killed easily figured that a movie theater would be an easy target for his crazy rampage.

The Grand Theater website, where the shooting took place, prominently says no guns are allowed under any circumstance:

    • Outside food or drink
    • Smoking including e-cigarettes
    • Possession of firearms or weapons of any kind regardless of whether openly orconcealed, with or without a permit

There are movie theaters where guns are allowed. But those are the exception, not the rule.

As of 2013, 45.6 percent of Louisiana households had gun owners. So just imagine what would have happened if those people–responsible gun owners, who’ve registered with the state of Louisiana–had been armed when this nut job started shooting and killing innocent people.

I understand there are people opposed to gun owners carrying loaded guns into movie theaters or malls or schools. And to you I ask; wouldn’t you want to have a gun to defend yourself and your family if someone started shooting?

As long as criminals know they can bring guns into “Gun Free Zones,” they will. And innocent, law abiding people are going to keep dying.

Ban all gun free zones today and allow people to protect themselves and their families.
