New body camera footage of an University of Cincinnati police encounter that led to the death of an unarmed black man has an officer facing murder charges.
Officer Ray Tensing pleaded not guilty in court Thursday to a murder charge after fatally shooting Samuel Dubose in the head during a traffic stop, NPR reports.“It was a senseless, asinine shooting,” Hamilton County prosecutor Joe Deters said in a news conference. “This doesn’t happen in the United States, O.K.? This might happen in Afghanistan. People don’t get shot for a traffic stop.”
Tensing could face 15 years to life in prison if convicted.
In the video, Tensing walks up to the driver’s side of DuBose’s vehicle and asks him for his license. DuBose looks in the car and says he has a license but not with him at the time. Tensing tries to open DuBose’s car, but DuBose tries to keep it closed.
DuBose says “I didn’t even do nothing” and starts the car. Tensing reaches into the car and fires one shot into Dubose’s head.
“This office has probably reviewed 100 police shootings, and this is the first time we’ve thought, ‘This is without question a murder,’” Deters said. The graphic video of the incident is below.
