The Wisconsin state Assembly passed a 20-week abortion ban Thursday, which Republican Gov. Scott Walker has said he will sign into law.
The bill would make it a felony to perform abortions after 20 weeks, unless the life of the mother is in immediate danger. There is otherwise no exception for life of the mother, rape or incest. Doctors caught performing a post-20 week abortion would face up to three and a half years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.The bill passed the Republican-backed Assembly on a 61-34 party line vote, reported the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
“Thanks to the Wisconsin Assembly for protecting unborn children after 5 months,” Walker said in a signed tweet Thursday. “Great day for life in WI.” He’s expected to announce his campaign for president next week. (RELATED: Walker Fends Off Criticism He’s Not Pro-Life)

The law is expected to be challenged in court, but opponents of the law may have trouble identifying someone to bring a lawsuit, because post-20 week abortions are rare in Wisconsin.
Similar bans in other states have been ruled unconstitutional and overturned.State Rep. Terese Berceau said any woman who votes for the bill “is truly a traitor to her gender,” the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.
“This Republican abortion ban is cruel, folks,” added Rep. Lisa Subeck. “Democrats support women and families.”
The House recently passed a similar 20-week abortion ban, dubbed the Pain Capable Unborn Child Act, because there’s some evidence unborn babies can feel pain at 20 weeks. “This bill is not about banning abortion,” Rep. Joe Sanfelippo said. “It is about protecting children who can feel pain.” (RELATED: These Four Republicans Voted Against The House-Passed Abortion Ban)
