• Contractors Struggle With Tidal Wave Of Executive Orders

    Leaked reports indicating contractors will be subjected to a slew of new executive orders prompted defense industry groups to urge the administration to ease up Tuesday.

    “Rapid growth in compliance requirements is becoming untenable,” a letter to White House officials argued. “The impacts, inefficiencies, and in many cases, unintended consequences are such that the interests of the American taxpayer are being significantly and negatively impacted.”

    The letter, originally obtained by Defense One, pleaded with the administration to cease the surge of regulations. It was addressed to Chief of Staff Denis McDonough and Senior Adviser Valerie Jarrett.

    “Adding thousands of pages of new requirements to an already complex federal acquisition system, which contractors must navigate … The net effect has been to significantly increase the costs of doing business with the government,” the letter read.

    Leadership within the National Defense Industrial Association, the Aerospace Industries Association, the Professional Services Council and the IT Alliance for Public Sector all signed the letter.

    Already, through executive orders alone, the administration has raised the minimum wage for contractors, blacklisted contractors who violate labor rules and ruled that sexual orientation is a protected class, among many other mandates.

    Soon, according to The New York Times, contractors will have to deal with even more regulations. This include increasing hours of sick leave a worker gets annually and allowing them to carry those hours over to the next year.

    The Department of Labor couldn’t confirm whether such an order is on its way. Nevertheless, it is an idea the president has advocated for since his most recent State of the Union speech in January.

    “Send me a bill that gives every worker in America the opportunity to earn seven days of paid sick leave,” he said at the time. “It’s the right thing to do.”
