• Olympic Committee SCRAMBLING To Find New Host City After Boston Bails

The U.S. Olympic Committee has come crawling back to the runners-up to re-submit their bids to host the 2024 Summer Games after the committee’s first choice said it didn’t want them.

The committee will be contacting Washington, D.C., Los Angeles and San Francisco asking the cities to re-submit their bids to host the games to see if they are still interested, The Associated Press reports.

Larry Probst, U.S. Olympic Committee chairman, told the AP the board was still gathering feedback from the three originally unchosen cities and would make a decision before the end of August.

“We’ve go to reconnect with the three cities that were part of the group of finalists,” he said.

D.C. was one of four finalists chosen by the USOC to host the 2024 games, but was passed over for Boston. The Boston bid, however, lacked political support and had almost zero support from city residents.

Boston Mayor Marty Walsh told ESPN in late July he wouldn’t sign any contract with the Olympic Committee that put “one dollar of taxpayer money on the line for one penny of overruns on the Olympics.”

D.C. officials seemed optimistic that the city could still host the games. Mayor Muriel Bowser’s Chief of Staff John Falcicchio said he was uncertain what would happen next in the bid process.

“We were surprised that Boston’s bid deflated,” Falcicchio said. “It is too early to say what is next but we remain proud of the bid put forth by D.C. 2024.”

This bid process is still just the first step in securing the Olympic Games for an American city. Once a city is chosen, it has to compete on the international stage with cities like Rome, Paris and Toronto, all which are seen as strong contenders.

Probst, though, still thinks a U.S. city has a chance to host the games.

“We would love to host the games in 2024 and hope to have a strong bid,” he told the AP.
