  • Foreign Officials In The US Can’t Stop Watching Trump

The U.S. ambassador to the U.N. suggested Wednesday that her international counterparts are closely watching Donald Trump’s presidential candidacy.

Amb. Samantha Power addressed a gathering of reporters Wednesday and laughed when a reporter asked her about the international response to the 2016 presidential race so far. “I’ll have to think of a diplomatic answer,” she said.

Noting the spike in CNN’s viewership during the first Republican debate, Power said she’d heard a “modest share” of that increase came from her colleagues at the U.N. According to Power, it’s natural for “some of the more colorful aspects” in the election to get the most attention. (RELATED: New ISIS Magazine Offers Prisoners ‘For Sale,’ Threatens Refugees)

No candidate has brought more “color” to coverage of the election than Trump.

And that flurry of attention has extended beyond America’s borders. Promoting an upcoming soccer match between the U.S. and Mexico, a television network is interpolating victorious Mexican moments with statements by Trump, including the line “we don’t have victories anymore.” (VIDEO: Incredible Ad Uses Angry Trump To Hype US-Mexican Showdown)

Power made an implicit dig at Trump’s stances on immigration and other issues, saying that during elections, disproportionate attention went to the “loudest voices… unwelcoming to people coming from other countries.” She also said that her counterparts’ attitudes on Trump contrasted with their relative gratitude for what she characterized as the Obama administration’s more proactive role in the world.
