The family of Kate Steinle filed a claim Tuesday against San Francisco Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi, the Bureau of Land Management and Immigration and Customs Enforcement alleging that all bear responsibility for her death.
Steinle, 32, was shot and killed July 1 while walking with her father and a friend along Pier 14 by Juan Francisco Lopez-Sanchez, a Mexican national and five-time deportee.Lopez-Sanchez has five felony convictions for illegally entering the United States and was released from federal prison earlier this year before he was sent to San Francisco on a 20-year-old warrant in a minor
The incident has ignited a national debate on illegal immigration and drawn the ire of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.
A ballistics expert said last week Lopez-Sanchez accidentally fired the gun and that it was pointed at the ground when it went off.
A judge is expected to rule in September whether Lopez-Sanchez should be held for a murder trial.
