  • Poll: Majority Of Americans Think Congress Is Corrupt, Out Of Touch

With just three days to pass a budget before the government shuts down, most of the nation doesn’t trust Congress to make the right decision.

According to a new Gallup poll, an overwhelming 79 percent of Americans think Congress is out of touch with the average U.S. resident and 52 percent think most members are corrupt.

While the legislative branch’s dismal approval ratings have hovered around 14 percent in recent years, traditionally constituents have had a higher opinion of their own representative, although even that number has reached a record low.

Thirty-two percent of those surveyed said they thought their own representative was corrupt while 69 percent said they believe lawmakers put their own special interests before the needs of their constituents.

According to Gallup, feelings of unease could be heightened by the threat of the government running out of funding.

Some speculate House Speaker John Boehner’s resignation could have been a maneuver to avoid shutdown.

“But if this is true, it could confirm some of Americans’ worst impressions of Congress, as it would suggest that simple legislative functions, such as funding the federal government, are enough to thrust the House into leadership turmoil,” Gallup wrote in its findings.

The poll was conducted from Sept. 9-13 using a random sampling of 1,025 phone interviews of U.S. residents over the age of 18 and leaves a margin of error of plus or minus four.
