In a 47 to 53 vote, the Senate failed to pass a continuing resolution Thursday that would have temporarily funded the government while freezing Planned Parenthood funding for a year.
Shortly before the vote, the White House threatened to veto the measure, which would have kept the government running until Dec. 11.
McConnell is expected to introduce a “clean” version of the bill which will likely to come to a vote Monday.
The majority leader said it’s an “exercise in futility” to attempt to defund Planned Parenthood and is pressing for members of his party pass the budget, Politico reports.
“I’m anxious to defund Planned Parenthood, but the honest answer of that is that’s not going to happen until you have a president who has a similar view,” he told the publication.
Far-right lawmakers in both chambers have been pushing to defund the organization after videos emerged allegedly showing doctors discussing harvesting fetal body parts for profit.Congress has until Wednesday to pass a budget before the government runs out of money.
