• Chart: For Every American Added To US Population, Immigration Will Add 7 More

For every person added to the U.S. population by current residents in the next 50 years, future immigrants and their descendants will account for seven more, a new chart from the Senate Subcommittee on Immigration and the National Interest shows.

If federal law doesn’t change, new immigrants (legal and illegal) and their descendants will add 103 million new persons to the U.S. population by 2065, the chart shows. Current residents — including current immigrants and their descendants — will add just 14 million.

The chart is based on a recent Pew Research Center analysis of federal data that found a 1965 immigration policy overhaul dramatically affected population growth and demographics. Last week marked 50 years since the bill’s passage, which then-President Lyndon Johnson said was “not a revolutionary bill.”

Pew found immigrants and their descendants accounted for 55 percent of U.S. population growth since the law passed, which exploded the foreign-born population in size and total share and reshaped demographics. (RELATED: Wages Declined As Immigration Surged)

The size of the foreign-born population has increased sharply from 9.6 million to a record 45 million, and is projected to reach 78 million by 2065, when deaths and departures from the U.S. are accounted for. And by 2065, Pew projects nearly 1 in 5 U.S. residents will be foreign-born.

“It is not mainstream, but extreme, to continue surging immigration beyond all historical precedent,” Republican Sen. Jeff Sessions, subcommittee chair, said in a statement. “It is time for moderation to prevail, and for us to focus on improving the jobs, wages, and security of the 300 million people already living inside our borders.”
