The San Diego-based One America News proposed to take over the Feb. 26 Republican Presidential Debate at the University of Houston from NBE, after the network was suspended from hosting debates after its disastrous CNBC-hosted debate in Boulder, Colo.
In March, Charles Herring, the president of One America News met with Sean Spicer, the Republican National Committee’s communications director, in Washington. The two men got along well and Herring brought his checkbook. Then, came the deal breaker.
Herring was put off by Spicer’s insistence that the RNC hand-pick the moderators and that there was no guarantee a reporter, host or news anchor from One America News could participate in their news channel’s own event.
Now with NBC out, Herring sent a new proposal to the GOP leadership that includes promises to make the broadcast feed available free to any and all media outlets and the establishment of a committee to develop questions more appropriate to a Republican debate audience.
