• Cloakroom Confidential: Tiberi–A Solid Choice for Ways and Means Chair

Now that Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) is on the verge of becoming the new Speaker of the House, the Chairman slot at House Ways and Means is up for grabs. There are three candidates vying for the job as top tax writer in the House: representatives Pat Tiberi (R-Ohio), Kevin Brady (R-Texas) and Devin Nunes (R-Calif.).

This is a close call and it depends on what you want from the Ways and Means Committee when you choose your new leader. The most important legislation that conservatives want from the tax writing committee is a comprehensive tax reform bill that simplifies the tax code, lowers the tax burden on the American people and a lower corporate tax rat to make America competitive again.

Leading by example is important. Rep. Tiberi has been frugal in his own office and has returned over $2 million and he was against earmarks before the ban. Those are good signs and he would be a pretty solid choice for the job.

None of the candidates have great scores from neither Heritage Action for America nor Conservative Review. None of them are members of the House Freedom Caucus and I don’t think anybody would say that any of these guys are Tea party favorites. , Yet if you measure a candidate by what they have done, then Tiberi seems to edge out his competitors.

Tiberi has been tough on the IRS Commissioner Lois Learner. He held hearings on the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion bill and he played a significant role in repealing the ObamaCare 1099 reporting requirement that was a nightmare for small businesses. Those are excellent accomplishments.

What matters the most in a candidate for Chairman of House Ways and Means is tax policy. Rep. Tiberi pushed hard for two bills that passed the House that expanded business expensing. The Congressman received the Tax Foundation’s Distinguished Service Award to pushing tax reform, permanent bonus expensing and a more competitive U.S. business tax system.

Tiberi has some strong conservative credentials and is the best choice to lead the Committee. Conservatives should line up behind him.
