Sanders Thinks Global Warming Should Be Top Priority Of GOP Debate

Vermont Senator and Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders responded to a GOP debate question about the candidate’s greatest weaknesses by Tweeting:

It is an embarrassment that we have a major political party that rejects the overwhelming science on climate change.

Sanders advocated fighting global warming through President Obama’s Clean Power Plan, but according to analysis by the libertarian Cato Institute, using models created by the Environmental Protection Agency, the plan would only advert only 0.019° Celsius of warming by the year 2100, an amount so small that it couldn’t be detected.

The Clean Power Plan is expected to cost a staggering $41 billion annually.

Sen. Sanders and other Democrats have long claimed that the United States must “lead by example” on global warming as, mathematically, American CO2 reduction schemes are futile, if China and India keep increasing their carbon dioxide emissions.

The world’s largest emitter of carbon dioxide has been China since 2006, with India accounting for the largest share of global emissions growth. According to a 2014 study by the European Union, China emits 29 percent of the world’s carbon dioxide, while the US is only responsible for 15 percent of the world’s emissions (the European Union itself only accounts for 10 percent and India accounts for another 6 percent).

India has expressed disappointment in the draft text of the U.N. Climate Change Conference in Paris. Their climate change minister said he was “not at all happy” with the draft for reasons of “equity.” An estimated 400 million Indians — 31 percent of the population — lack access to electricity, so the country is reluctant to adopt any policy which could slow down growth.
