Now that real estate tycoon Donald Trump is running for president, an incident from November of 1991 has resurfaced in which GOP presidential frontrunner actually had his limo stop so he could save a man from a brutal assault by a mugger with a baseball bat.
Trump and his then-wife Marla Maples were riding around New York City in his limousine, headed out to New Jersey’s Meadowlands for a Paula Abdul concert, according to the New York Daily News.Trump’s limo was about to enter the Lincoln Tunnel at about 8 p.m. when he saw “a big guy with a big bat” swinging away at another guy.
What happened next is absolutely incredible!
Trump noticed the victim taking “5 or 6 whacks,” knew he was about to be killed and instinctively Trump told the driver to pull the car over.
He leaped out of the car as his wife tugged at his arm trying to stop him, and put himself in potential danger by confronting the mugger directly:
“Someone in the car looked over and said, ‘Gee, look at that, it’s a mugging,’” Trump said. “I said to my driver to stop the car because it was brutal-looking.” He got out of the car, with Maples tugging at his coat to get him to stop.Donald Trump never sought attention for this story. Eyewitnesses confirmed Trump’s account according to the Daily News and the publication subsequently contacted him for the story.“The guy with the bat looked at me, and I said, ‘Look, you’ve gotta stop this. Put down the bat,’” Trump said. “I guess he recognized me because he said, ‘Mr. Trump, I didn’t do anything wrong.’ I said, ‘How could you not do anything wrong when you’re whacking a guy with a bat?’ Then he ran away.”
Kathleen Romeo, a 16-year-old student at the time, noticed that it was Trump that stopped the fight and yelled, “That’s Trump!”
“A lot of people were surprised that he got out to see what was happening,” Romeo said. She said that Trump had chased the bat-wielder off before he even got out of the limo — and that Trump “just looked around and went back into his limo” — but other witnesses backed up The Donald’s story.
“All of a sudden, a big long limousine pulls up on an angle, and Donald Trump pops out with the blonde, too,” a witness said. “There was a guy with a bat, hitting a guy over the head, and Trump yelled, ‘Put that bat down. What are you doing?’ The guy dropped the bat, came over and started talking to him.”
Trump, being Trump, told reporters, “I’m not looking to play this thing up … I’m surprised you found out about it.”
He said afterward, he thought about the help his mother got when she was mugged three weeks before, in which a witness to the attack chased and caught the man who attacked her.
