  • Who Will Obama Endorse For President?

Who Will Obama Support In 2016?

The jury is still out on who President Barack Obama will endorse in the 2016 Democratic Primary, but he has hinted that an endorsement may be forthcoming.

White House spokesman Josh Earnest told reporters in August he “wouldn’t rule out the possibility of an endorsement,” but wouldn’t go as far as to say who the president might throw his weight behind.

With speculation mounting that Vice President Joe Biden may soon announce his 2016 bid, his entry into the race would pit Biden against Hillary Clinton, and it puts Obama in a tough place.

Will he endorse Biden or Hillary? NBC’s Today show host Savannah Guthrie posed that question to Obama in February, but he didn’t take the bait.

“I love ‘em both. Good try,” Obama told her.

Shortly after rumors started swirling about a possible Biden candidacy in 2016, a private meeting between Biden and Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren only added more fuel to the fire.

In late August, Biden’s official calendar showed that he would be spending the weekend at his home in Delaware, but instead he was allegedly in Washington at an unannounced meeting with Warren to discuss economic policy, CNN reported.

Warren, a favorite of liberal Democrats, has already announced her intentions to sit out the 2016 presidential race, but has yet to endorse another candidate, leading to speculation of a possible Biden/Warren ticket.

The combination of Biden and Warren could be enough to secure the support of the president who, in the past, allegedly promised his complete support to Warren, should she choose to run for President.

In 2014, New York Post reporter Ed Klein claimed sources told him of the secret endorsement, though Obama has made no public statement.

Obama allegedly assigned his top political adviser to do what ever she can to convince Warren to run in 2016. According to the Post, he held several secret meetings with Warren to explain Obama’s distrust of Clinton.

“During these meetings, Jarrett has explained to Warren that Obama is worried that if Hillary succeeds him in the White House, she will undo many of his policies,” Klein reported.

Biden said earlier this year that he would announce his plans “at the end of summer,” but that deadline has come and gone without much more than speculation.

Over the weekend, Biden met with some of his family and friends to discuss his intentions, but he doesn’t plan on announcing until after Tuesday night’s debate, the New York Post reports.

Several sources close to Biden, Allen reports, told him that the vice president hasn’t heard anything in the past several months that would deter him from entering the presidential race.

Obama even gave Biden his ‘blessing’ to run in 2016, according to CNN, and it appears that is as close as he will come to an endorsement for the time being.
