GOP presidential candidate Ben Carson addressed controversy surrounding aspects of his biography that have been called into question during a press conference with hostile reporters in Florida Friday night.
“There is a desperation on behalf of some to try to find a way to tarnish me,” Carson declared. “Next week it’ll be my kindergarten teacher who said I peed in my pants.”Doubts have been raised about Carson’s claim, which he made in his 1996 biography Gifted Hands, about being offered a scholarship to attend West Point.
He clarified during the press conference that several senior military officials offered to help him get a West Point scholarship because of his background and academic standing, but noted that he was not formally offered the scholarship.
The reporters continuously insinuated that Carson is dishonest and he shot back, arguing that the media’s true intent is to derail his campaign.
“Here’s my prediction: My prediction is that all of you guys piling on is actually going to help me, because when I go out to these book signings and I see these thousands of people, they say, ‘Don’t let the media get you down,’” Carson said. “They understand that this is a witch hunt.”
Carson pointed out how the media was indifferent to President Obama’s past when he was running for president.“I do not remember this level of scrutiny for one President Barack Obama when he was running. In fact, I remember just the opposite,” he said. “Why are you guys not interested in why his records are sealed? Why are you not interested in that? Can somebody tell me that?”
