German Chancellor Angela Merkel said she is, deeply shaken by the news and pictures that are reaching us from Paris.” British Prime Minister David Cameron offered his condolences to the French people saying “I am shocked by events in Paris tonight. Our thoughts and prayers are with the French people. We will do whatever we can to help.”

French media reported that at least 140 people have been killed after multiple shootings with automatic weapons and shotguns and three explosions close to the Stade de France. Police have regained control of the Bataclan concert hall, where at least 100 hostages were killed by gunmen. Twelve hostages were freed.

French President Francois Hollande took to the airwaves to announce his country’s borders have been closed and the military has been dispatched to the streets. A state of emergency has also been declared.

This is the first time France has declared a state of emergency since the Algerian war, which took place between 1954 and 1962. It is also the first time a curfew has been imposed since the dark days of world war two in 1944.
