Filmmaker Spike Lee compared Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump to Nazi leader Adolf Hitler on Monday.
“[Trump] wants to close down the mosques now,” Lee said in an interview with The Daily Beast. “That’s like the Nazis. That’s Hitler, [Italian fascist leader Benito] Mussolini, the Axis powers. You can’t do that.”The GOP front-runner is pushing for stricter surveillance of the nation’s mosques and proposed a national registry of Syrian refugees following the coordinated attacks across the French capital by ISIS that left 130 people dead and more than 300 others were wounded on Nov. 13.
The “Malcolm X” director blasted Trump for claiming that some Muslim Americans in New Jersey celebrated on 9/11 and claimed Muslims were victimized after the terrorist attacks.
“That was a bold-faced lie. Muslims were getting their asses kicked in this country when that happened,” Lee contended. “Here’s the thing: the United States has perfected the science of ‘the boogeyman. Native Americans, African Americans, Hispanics, Nazis, Soviets, Chinese and now it is Muslims. They’re the new boogeymen.”
Attributing terrorism to radical Islam is wrong, Lee argued.
“The Planned Parenthood shooter, that guy is a terrorist, too,” he said, referencing the man accused of killing three people at a Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado Springs last week. “That’s not the first time some Planned Parenthood building has been shot up. That’s terrorism.”“If we want to talk about terrorists, you can’t have the myopic view that all terrorists are Muslims,” Lee added.
“Did you happen to catch the video of the Black Lives Matter protester being stomped and beaten by Trump’s supporters at one of his rallies?” the Daily Beast asked.
“Oh, they beat his ass. And then after he said, ‘He needed to be roughed up!’ Donald might as well just said, ‘Fuck his black ass up!’” Lee replied.
