• Another Historic Memorial Bites the Dust — This Time It’s George Washington

Surge Summary: A San Francisco high school will be removing a mural featuring George Washington because some claim it is offensive.

The San Francisco Board of Education has voted to scrub a George Washington High School‘s  over-eighty-year-old work of art portraying it’s namesake because of complaints it is offensive

    Joseph Saco reflects,

The march of removing traces of U.S. history continue at an unprecedented pace with shallow and emotional reasons being utilized as excuses to cover up or change historical records. [The Resurgent]

The center of the San Francisco George Washington “controversy” is murals depicting the president standing near the corpse of a Native American and another that shows Washington on his plantation with slaves, each painted in a San Francisco high school in the 1930s.

The Education Board Commissioner, Mark Sanchez, elucidated: “This is reparations.”

Evidently, only two of the thirteen panel series of the mural were tagged as objectionable – but that was enough to doom the whole piece. It will be painted over.

The Board of Education offered no resistance to the murals erasure – recall, this is San Francisco we’re talking about here — because, as district’s Indian Education program coordinator Paloma Flores put it:

“It’s not a matter of offense, it’s a matter of the right to learn without a hostile environment. Intent does not negate lived experience.”

    Saco’s verdict:

This is ridiculous. Students are supposed to be attending school to learn about history, not be offended by a painting of something that happened over 200 years ago. Not one of the students has been personally affected by George Washington’s life in the 1700s, especially with the strides America has made in the field of civil rights.

By the way, rendering the decision even more dubious: the fact that it will take at least a year to finish and, according to CBS News cost the city upwards of $600,000.

Of questionable necessity, reactionary and expensive.

    Sounds just like liberalism.
