• Pelosi v. Ocasio-Cortez! What Does It Mean for the Democratic Party?

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has unleashed what Mary Papenfuss has framed

a surprisingly scathing attack on the gutsy crew of progressive freshmen women in the House of Representatives, dismissing them as a tiny squad who have a “public whatever,” but no backing in Congress.

Not unexpectedly, uttering what sounds like Soviet-style boilerplate,

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) shot back on Twitter later saying that the “public whatever” is public sentiment.” She added: “Wielding the power to shift it is how we actually achieve meaningful change in this country.”

Pelosi’s acerbic reaction seemingly was sparked by an Ocasio-Cortez spokesman (spokesperson?) who sniped

the “greatest threat to mankind is the cowardice of the Democratic Party.

(Well, he at least got that part right about the Donkey Party being a “threat to mankind”!)

    Pelosi’s retort came

    in an interview with New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd published Saturday as she defended herself against criticism … that she’s caving into the Republicans … ;

especially for her push to pass the Senate Republican bill (versus the House version) which will increase border funds without humanitarian guarantees for immigrant detainees, particularly children.

The Speaker answered that the Senate bill – opposed by AOC and three of her likeminded colleagues (Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) and Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.) — was the best she could get.

She lay the border bill’s deficiencies at the feet of the “authentically terrible” Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.),” scoffing,

[T]he press likes to make a story that is more about Democrats divided than the fact that Mitch McConnell doesn’t care about the children.’’

(I guess she’d have to lump Slate into that unscrupulous “press” pile – they’ve just posted a piece top-lined by side-by-side photos of Pelosi and Ocasio-Cortez and blaring, “What Happened to Unity?”)

“If the left doesn’t think I’m left enough, so be it,” Pelosi concluded tartly.

I understand what they’re saying. But we have a responsibility to get something done, which is different from advocacy. We have to have a solution, not just a Twitter fight.”

    So, maybe a cat-fight, instead?

Napoleon is reputed to have prescribed, “Never interfere with an enemy while he’s in the process of destroying himself.”

If reckless, loopy extremism of the Pelosi/AOC caucus threatens the nation, be heartened it’s also sowing rifts within their ranks. And these might widen into chasms that swallow their whole pernicious, lawless, godless, big-government, baby-killing, marriage-perverting, taxpayer-punishing, Constitution-shredding enterprise.

    Conservatives: interfere not.
