  • Prudent Immigration Laws Might Actually Save the Lives of Illegal Immigrants

Daily Surge Summary: Changes in America’s Illegal Immigration measures could actually save the lives of those who might attempt to sneak into the country.

Thomas Gallatin/Patriot Post underscored a side-benefit of prudent U.S. border policies which doesn’t get much ink, but is certainly true nonetheless …

On Monday, the Departments of Justice and Homeland Security announced and on Tuesday the U.S. government implemented a new rule regarding U.S. asylum laws. Overwhelming numbers of foreign migrants have been exploiting America’s asylum system to enter the country. All the while, Democrats in Congress have been intractably resisting any legislative solution to the border crisis — their party, effectively, has adopted an open-borders policy.

The new rule would bar foreign nationals from receiving asylum in the U.S. if they have not first applied for asylum in an intermediary country, which in many current cases would be Mexico or another Central American country.

Attorney General William Barr, announcing the development, offered this elaboration:

“The United States is a generous country but is being completely overwhelmed by the burdens associated with apprehending and processing hundreds of thousands of aliens along the southern border. This Rule will decrease forum shopping by economic migrants and those who seek to exploit our asylum system to obtain entry to the United States — while ensuring that no one is removed from the United States who is more likely than not to be tortured or persecuted on account of a protected ground.”

Leftist sock-puppets responded according to type:  The new rule is “most egregious” and “extreme”. Charanya Krishnaswami, Amnesty International’s advocacy director for the Americas, incriminated the act as something that would “fundamentally eviscerate the right to territorial asylum in the United States.” Court action, no surprise, is being threatened by several groups; an ironic response, note the writers at Patriot Post, from those who are advocating illegal immigration.

We relayed the heart-wrenching story last month of the drowning death of a migrant and his two-year-old child. Because of the father’s impatience with America’s asylum system, he chose to break the law and try to illegally cross into the U.S. — a decision that tragically ended up costing him and his child their lives. The new rule is aimed [at] decreasing deadly incidents like this by eliminating another pull factor.

Modifying U.S. immigration and border policy can play a substantial role in diminishing the lure of supremely risky hope, often downright false hope, that attracts thousands upon thousands to abandon their native countries and trek through the dessert to the United States. A responsible, grown-up regard for immigration realities is conspicuously good for America and her people. Fascinatingly, it’s also good for those who might hazard their well-being – perhaps their and their loved ones’ very lives — to sneak in here.
