• Epstein Lawyers Decry ‘Medieval Conditions’, Demand Answers for Their Client’s Death

Surge Summary: Defense team of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein will be launching an independent investigation into their client’s prison-cell death, hopefully providing answers that currently remain lacking.

The defense team for now-deceased sex-offender/billionaire financier Jeffrey Epstein – the group includes Martin Weinberg, Reid Weingarten, and Michael Miller. Weingarten — issued a statement Friday, saying they would be sponsoring their own “independent and complete” investigation into his death, according to Business Insider.

Denied bail, Epstein was being held at New York City’s Metropolitan Correctional Center on charges of conspiracy and sex trafficking of minors. July 23rd he was found unconscious with bruises on his neck and was subsequently put on suicide watch. July 29 he was taken off suicide watch. Saturday August 10 he was found unresponsive in his cell at the high-security federal prison. An autopsy report released Friday by the Bureau of Prisons formally declared his cause of death as suicide by hanging.

“First, no one should die in jail,” Epstein’s lawyers wrote in a statement, per a tweet by The New York Times’ Michael Gold. “And no one, not Mr. Epstein who was presumed innocent and had violated no prison disciplinary rule, and not anyone should be imprisoned under the harsh, even medieval conditions at the MCC where Mr. Epstein spent his final hours.”

Prior to the autopsy, conspiracy theories surrounding Epstein’s death were abounding. They doubtless will continue to circulate owing to the dramatic and ongoingly mysterious circumstances around his reportedly self-inflicted demise.

There was also scrutiny on the MCC, as multiple reports said that routine procedures were not followed prior to his death. Epstein was being housed alone after his cellmate was transferred, and the two guards monitoring his cell reportedly fell asleep during their shift after working severe overtime, according to The New York Times.

“His safety was the responsibility of the MCC,” the lawyers wrote. “It is indisputable that the authorities violated their own protocols.”

Long and short: conspiracy theories and suspicions aside, it is becoming increasingly evident that MCC employees blew it. Sloppiness? Negligence? Malfeasance? These questions need detailed and forthcoming answers.

Epstein’s defense team wrote that they intend to view the “pivotal videos” of the area surrounding Epstein’s cell in the moments leading up to his death — even if legal action is necessary.

By all accounts, Epstein was a creep, a pervert. Transparently, the guy was involved in a plethora of low-rent activity. Still, he was an American under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Federal government when he apparently was able to take his own life; if that turns out, in fact, to be what happened This is unacceptable in our system. Additional explanations beyond those already supplied are needed and possible remedial steps likely must to be taken.

Authorities that can fail so glaringly in their custodial role over an imprisoned tycoon/sex-fiend, can do the same with any American under their supervision. This poses a concern way beyond the way a single deviant was treated.

Here’s hoping the demands of Epstein’s counsel move this matter closer to a satisfactory conclusion. It sure isn’t at that place quite yet.
