  • It’s Certainly Well Deserved! Ilhan Omar Facing at Least One Challenger in 2020

Surge Summary: An announcement that Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) will be challenged in 2020 by Independent Party candidate Chris Kelley is welcome news indeed.

First, news is trickling out that the abrasive but ill-informed scold Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez will be facing numerous, and perhaps a few promising, challengers in 2020’s election cycle.

And now this bit of presumably happy news from The Resurgent’s Tim Thomas:

Veteran police officer Chris Kelley is set to announce … that he will enter the race for Minnesota’s 5th Congressional house district – the seat currently held by Rep. Ilhan Omar.

[Kelley has since announced he will run against Omar]

The information was relayed Thursday by Minneapolis ABC affiliate KTSP Channel 5 Eyewitness News. Reports are Kelley’s decision was inspired by Omar’s unnerving comments about 9/11.

“It was kind of a slap in the face to me as a first responder,” said Kelley, a 20-year veteran of the Minneapolis Police Department. Kelley is also an Army veteran who served in the Persian Gulf War in 1990-1991 and twice during the Iraq War in 2004 and 2009.

“9/11 was the Pearl Harbor of our time, my generation, and to kind of dismissively talk about it in that way was one of the motivating factors [of his decision to run.].”

Hopefully, Kelly’s experience will be reflected in the decisions of multitudes of others in her district who will be persuaded she’s a clueless menace – or perhaps an intentional menace – who belongs nowhere near government power; and refuse to re-elect her to office. Either way, his response to Omar’s galling vapidity is a worthy one.

Back in April, you may recall, Omar stated the Council on American-Islamic Relations was founded after the September 11 attack on New York City and the nation because

“they recognized that some people did something and that all of us were starting to lose access to our civil liberties.” [emphasis added]

“[S]ome people did something”? A rather anodyne characterization of the largest terror attack ever on U.S. soil, wouldn’t you say? And this by an elected official?

Kelley, who previously ran as a Republican for a Minnesota’s state senate seat, will present himself under the banner of the Independence Party in 2020.

If anyone deserves – no, demands – a challenge it is Ilhan Omar. Good to see somebody taking up the gauntlet.
