• Va. Sheriff Says He May Deputize Thousands to Void Gun Control

Surge Summary: In response to additional gun-control measures threatened by his state’s Democratic legislature and governor, a Virginia sheriff is suggesting he might deputize thousands of Virginians, thus exempting them from these restrictions.

A sheriff in Virginia informed interested parties on Facebook last week that if his state’s Democratic-controlled legislature passes restrictive gun control laws, he just might deputize thousands of citizens, thus granting them exemption from the laws.

Here’s the skinny from The Blaze’s Aaron Colen:

Culpeper County Sheriff Scott Jenkins praised his county for becoming one of dozens of “sanctuary” counties in the state for gun owners and said he will exercise the power of his position to support gun rights, if necessary.

“I remain very optimistic that our General Assembly will not pass the proposed bills,” Jenkins wrote. “Obviously, if passed, there are many of us willing to challenge these laws through the courts. In addition, if necessary, I plan to properly screen and deputize thousands of our law-abiding citizens to protect their constitutional right to own firearms.”

The backstory is: upon acceding to control of the legislature last month, Democratic lawmakers, with Democratic Gov. Ralph Northam’s support, got to work on gun control bills. Gun rights advocates were understandably alarmed.

The bills include previously rejected legislation that would require background checks on all gun transactions; ban “assault weapons,” high-capacity magazines, bump stocks, and silencers; make it illegal to purchase more than one handgun per month; and implement “red flag” laws.

“Northam has declared war on Virginia’s gun owners,” said Philip Van Cleave, the president of the Virginia Citizens Defense League.

Some counties have responded by declaring themselves Second Amendment “sanctuary” counties. While that designation has no formal meaning legally, it does informally establish that law enforcement will not be going along to enforce some specific aspects of proposed gun control laws.

A similar tactic has been used by liberal cities across the country, with law enforcement organizations in those cities refusing to cooperate with federal immigration authorities when dealing with illegal immigrant criminal suspects.

The difference between the two scenarios, of course, is “Second Amendment sanctuary counties” are upholding a fundamental, explicitly enunciated constitutional right; whereas those flouting federal Immigration statutes are doing quite the opposite.

Some Americans continue to illustrate, when backed into a corner they can come up with all manner of imaginative means to push back and protect their cherished, dearly purchased rights.
