• Whoa, Nellie! This Poll Pretty Well Confirms the Doom of Western Civilization

Surge Summary: A recent poll indicates a majority of Americans from either political party believe Donald Trump or Barack Obama are/were a greater president than George Washington – hence, confirming, America is in big trouble.

It was a great ride. Western Civilization had a heck of a run and we all had a lot of good laughs along the way. But if a recent poll from Monmouth is to be believed, let’s just save ourselves the humiliation of dragging this out, and go ahead and put a wrap on things.

At first blush the poll appears to be nothing more than a standard survey of average American voters’ opinions on the current presidential race. But looking deeper, down to questions 15 and 16 specifically, this poll goes from mundane to mind-bending.

Question 15 asked respondents, “Who was a better president: George Washington or Donald Trump?” Question 16 was the counterpart, “Who was a better president: George Washington or Barack Obama?”

Just for clarity, George Washington was the man whose character and example created the very office of the presidency to begin with. For those who may have forgotten:

    • Washington was the only president to be elected unanimously by the Electoral College. And he did it twice.
    • Washington’s prestige managed to coordinate the disparate interests of Congress, his ragtag army, a foreign French power, and dissimilar states into a concerted war effort.
    • Washington maintained, against all odds, the morale of the continental army in spite of inhuman conditions and lack of supplies.
    • Washington willfully resigned as Commander-in-Chief rather than seizing power at the end of the American Revolution.
    • Washington guided the writing of the U.S. Constitution as president of the Constitutional convention.
    • Washington oversaw and directed the creation of several key government forms that survive to this day like the cabinet system and inaugural address.
    • Washington set the precedent of a pro-American neutrality that habitually kept the United States out of needless conflicts with European powers – wars that otherwise could have ripped the new country apart.
    • Washington secured “ownership” of over 300 slaves by the time of his death, for the sole purpose of providing for them and preventing slave auctioneers from separating their families. He willed that they all be freed upon the death of his wife Martha and wrote often about the need to abolish the institution of slavery.

These are just some of the highlights of a man without whose influence there would be no presidency, no American government, and no America at all. That’s why it was embarrassing that Washington beat out Trump in this Monmouth poll only by the margin of 71%-15%, and beat out Obama by a thinner 58%-33% pace.

But it gets worse. When broken down by political identification, the poll takes a turn from embarrassing to appalling.

Amongst Republicans, Washington beats Trump by a razor thin (relatively speaking) 44%-37%.

Amongst Democrats, Obama beats Washington by 63%-29%.

Yes, you read that correctly. The cult of Obama is so strong in the Democrat Party electorate that the 44th President is preferred over the Father of the Nation by a 34% margin. I’m speechless at the ignorance.

And to be clear, that Washington beats out Trump only by 7 percentage points in the Republican electorate is equally offensive.

Our political tribalism has evolved past the point of cult status. It has become a plague that infects more than just the loyalties of the heart. It now debilitates the mind to the point of such atrophy that people feel no remorse in pretending that Obama and Trump belong in even the same conversation as George Washington.

No way Western Civilization can (or should) survive such madness.
