• Bernie Sanders Out! — Which Presents America with Good News and Bad News

Surge Summary: Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders has dropped out of the race – which is positive news for America. Terrible news remains, however. Americans need not let their guard down on that.

Fox News is announcing a major political development bringing us some good news … but reminding us of some disconcerting news as well …

Bernie Sanders has suspended his Democratic presidential campaign — all but handing the nomination to former Vice President Joe Biden.

According to a brief campaign statement, the senator from Vermont announced the decision during an all-staff conference call Wednesday morning. …

Sanders won New Hampshire’s primary and scored a landslide victory in the Nevada caucuses in late in February, as he surged to front-runner status in the nomination race.

The populist lawmaker then suffered a string of major primary defeats in his second straight presidential bid, but until now had refused to back out of the race, instead pressing Biden to embrace progressive policy positions.

But Biden has amassed a near-insurmountable delegate lead, following decisive victories on Super Tuesday as well as subsequent contests — before coronavirus measures forced most primaries on the calendar to be delayed. …

Biden has praised Sanders in recent weeks and has said he would not pressure the senator to drop out of the race.

Biden has also embraced some progressive proposals, such as bankruptcy reform and free college tuition at public colleges and universities – policies that Sanders had pushed.

It’s welcome news for sure that the open, angry socialist running for the most influential office on planet earth has been rejected — even by the Democrats who were poised to support him if forced to do so. Yee-haw! Seemingly, the Republic dodged another bullet there.

A troubling side remains, however: Bernie Sanders came within a hairsbreadth of getting that party’s nomination; thus, one step closer to seizing the Oval Office. This, recall, is a man who is a frank enemy of the free market, antagonistic toward a sizable chunk of our founding principles; and, conversely, an enthusiast of regimes like the now-defunct Soviet Union and the not-quite-defunct Cuba and Venezuela. Bernie Sanders, conceivably, could have been the man moving his furniture into 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

That such a development was even a possibility? Positively chilling. No other way around it. It’s another signal of the dire and worsening trends attempting to swamp American culture and society.

Finally, as the Fox News piece mentions, Sanders’ influence has driven the Democratic party – and its presumptive presidential nominee – materially leftward. “Moderate” Joe Biden can only be regarded as such in comparison to the loopiest elements of his caucus. The policies and civic philosophy – such as it is – he currently espouses are hardy specimens of much of the worst of current progressive thought.

How did the United States ever arrive at a place at which such an individual, a leader of a major political party, could be a viable contender for the presidency?

No way to diagnose that other than decidedly bad news indeed.
