Surge Summary: Americans on both the left and right are being reminded of the dangers of “factions” — allegience to any political party more than allegiance to principles that guide our lives.

I suppose when we’re living in a world where writers for the New Yorker openly fantasize about a violent overthrow of the United States government:
…and one where champions of the #BelieveAllWomen, #MeToo movement publicly lament the lack of nuance and “gray” we are giving to men accused of sexual assault:

…I suppose I shouldn’t let anything surprise me anymore. But I admit that finding out I agree with a rabid LGBT activist from Hollywood that once dated the shock-rocker and Satanism-dabbler Marilyn Manson, took me a bit off guard.
Still, for my money, there’s a lot of truth in what actress Rose McGowan recently had to say:
McGowan, who sounded the alarm against sexual predator Harvey Weinstein but went unheeded, posted her comments on social media on Wednesday.
“I used to be a proud Democrat. I would have died for this damned country & its ideals. I was raised to be a proud Democrat,” she said, explaining how much she supported the party in her youth.
“And I was always told it was the Democratic Party that were the good guys, that our papers were [the New York Times] and [the Washington Post] & we as a family loved listening to [All Things Considered] & we’d talk about how much we loved [Ira Glass’] voice,” she continued.
“But now i know too much,” McGowan said. “And I feel really quite a sense of loss tonight. I am not a cynical person, but America g*ddamn. Republicans have always been painted as the bad guys, and i’ve always seen them more as a cult, but now i realize so are the democrats and the media.”
Credit the internet, social media, and the rise of alternative forms of information like talk radio, blogs, and YouTube with blowing the lid off the media’s cultish control over the flow of information. It’s not that there isn’t collusion and coordination in Big Media – simply consider the host of various newsworthy stories throughout the country on a given day and then note how the major newscasts all cover the exact same ones, real or contrived, in nearly the exact same way, down to their very choice of terminology.
Meanwhile, Rose is exactly right in her assessment of the political parties. In a weird way she has come to embrace the George Washington admonition about the trouble with factions – they come to serve the special interest and not the general interest. Have they been doing it for years? Of course.
For some on the right to become wise to it (i.e., “Why do Republicans always sell themselves as the pro-life party yet when they control the House, Senate, and White House, they never take action to defund Planned Parenthood or pass pro-life legislation?”) the abandonment of moral character as a non-negotiable qualification in presidential politics and the embrace of Donald J. Trump was the trigger.
For Rose and others on the left, it appears the astounding and sick hypocrisy exhibited by those so willing to lionize Christine Blasey-Ford but silence and humiliate Tara Reade, is doing the trick.
What does it mean? Will it help third-party candidates like Justin Amash gain traction? Perhaps, but given their entrenched stranglehold on electoral politics that the two parties have engineered and codified through the years, probably not. Still, more Americans recognizing and distancing themselves from the cults among us can’t be considered a bad thing, right?
