• Right Now: Time to End Social-Distancing Destruction of America’s Way of Life

Surge Summary: Life is full of potentially costly risks; but America does NOT usually stop people from going about their lives to avoid them. So, why the lockdown of society in the face of today’s COVID-19 outbreak? The United States confronted the “Hong Kong Flu” half-a-century ago without imposing a shutdown … and survived. Why can’t that policy be pursued today?

Automobiles kill tens of thousands every year – and drivers have not been quarantined and/or taken off the road.  Clearly, that would save thousands of lives every year.

The “ordinary” flu also kills tens of thousands every year, even with the availability of vaccinations (which often are only partially effective).  Clearly, if everyone were quarantined during the flu seasons, thousands of lives would be saved every year.

Obviously, we have learned to live (or die) with these particular examples and others.  Yet, for some reason, we have gone overboard in our fight against the coronavirus.  Government has frightened the American people to the point of abandoning the American Way-of-Life and their livelihood.

Of course, at first, since it was a new and unknown virus, early defensive measures may have been appropriate.  But not now.

We have drugs like Hydroxychloriquine and others, which have been proven effective when administered early at the first signs of the COVID-19 disease.  Also, we now know that most healthy people recover from the virus — and that most of the people who die have serious, underlying ailments, including old age.  They can be self-quarantined.

Unlike the proven environmental killers of our lifestyle, as mentioned above, we have completely overreacted to COVID-19.  We have shut down our economy and instituted new requirements (e.g., social-distancing) that are destroying large segments of our economy — like: arenas, leagues, theaters, restaurants, churches, conferences, hotels, rallies, cruses, airlines, tourism, trains, subways, waiting rooms, etc.  Already, 33 million are being left permanently unemployed!  This will have a massive, negative, inevitable effect leading to a full-blown, multiyear depression.

I’m in my 82nd year and can remember the “Hong Kong Flu” epidemic of the late 1960s. Contrast the solution pursued during that outbreak (mentioned in the following excellent historical commentary) with today’s devastating coronavirus lockdown. Yes! We weathered the medical storms fifty-years-ago without closing down our economy and creating a human panic and political/media warfare.  It was unthinkable that our government would surrender its control to Medical-Socialists with little regard for the economic wellbeing of our society. Social-Distancing is just one example of what our stupid government has done at the hands of so-called “medical-experts” (I refer to them as “medical schoolboys”):  It has literally shut-down vast swathes of our society and culture, leaving millions permanently unemployed!

(By the way, Government employees are unaffected by the shutdowns and will continue to be employed and paid their full salaries.)

Clearly, mandatory, impractical, over-reactions such as social-distancing must be IMMEDIATELY ended and left up to the discretion of individuals.  That has always been the American-Way.
