I suppose we could all just pretend we don’t know the truth, but we do. MSNBC, notorious for their race-baiting programming, has gotten caught up in a whirlwind of their own intersectionality games. Blasting the lack of corporate diversity, condemning the lack of advancement opportunities for women, it all becomes a tough row to hoe when your own network is guilty of the same offense.
So, when the leftist network needed to reshuffle its evening line-up after Chris Matthews fell on his own sword of misogyny, you could see it coming a mile away. Joy Reid, the controversial former Obama campaign worker, who famously launched a search for the people who “hacked her blog” and wrote disparaging remarks about homosexuality when everyone knew it was her (the announcement sparked a lot of OJ Simpson looking for the real murderer comparisons), was going to get bumped to primetime.
She wasn’t ready. She isn’t capable. And it shows.
The latest example in what is becoming an epic novel of errors on her program “The ReidOut,” was her peculiar comparison of President Trump and his supporters to Muslims. Yes, she went there. Yes, it was as cringeworthy as you can imagine.
“When leaders, let’s say in the Muslim world, talk a lot of violent talk, and encourage their supporters to be willing to commit violence — including on their own bodies — in order to win against whoever they decide is the enemy, we in the U.S. media describe that as ‘They are radicalizing those people.’ Particularly when they’re radicalizing young people. That’s how we talk about the way Muslims act. When you see what Donald Trump is doing, is that any different from what we describe as radicalizing people?”
If you didn’t follow what she’s attempting to say, here’s a straight-forward, one-sentence summary: “Trump supporters are so violent you would think they were Muslims.”
How can a woman who says that ever criticize the president over any alleged “Muslim ban” or Islamophobia? How can she lament the right’s supposed turn towards xenophobia? She’s the living embodiment of it.
And it wasn’t just conservatives who recognized that.
Socialist journalist Luke Savage was appalled:
Even a well-documented anti-Semite like Linda Sarsour knew it was bad:
Muslim “Squad” members Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib both called on her to apologize. So did CAIR (Council on American-Islamic Relations). She didn’t.
“If Trump was a Muslim leader, not the leader of the Christian right, how would we in the media describe what he’s doing?” she began. “I asked that question on Monday and there was a lot of conversation, particularly online, after the segment aired, some of which was frankly not in good faith.”
Reid is an embarrassment and disgrace, but MSNBC had to know that before hiring her. Her blog revealed anti-Muslim sentiments and anti-gay (and not legitimate moral or religious opposition that is falsely tagged “anti-gay” for political reasons; hers were just hateful and disparaging personal comments about gay people) sentiments before she got her “ReidOut” gig, demonstrating that the brass at NBC believed they would score more intersectionality points from promoting a black woman than they would lose for promoting someone with a history of offensive remarks towards homosexuals and Muslims.
It was a bold strategy, and now we’ll see how it works out for them.
