• Time for Another One? When Will Drew Brees Apologize for the Jacob Blake Helmet?

Surge Summary: A few weeks ago, star NFL quarterback Drew Brees dared speak truth about the issue of kneeling for the National Anthem. His statements created quite a bit of criticism – and he humiliatingly backtracked, immediately and promptly. Now, he’s celebrating Jacob Blake – a known criminal and woman-abuser – by sporting his name on his helmet.

As I watched Sunday Night Football and observed the continued decline of the downfield prowess and potency of the New Orleans Saints’ perennial pro-bowl quarterback Drew Brees, I couldn’t help but think of how far he has fallen in ways more than physical over the course of these last several months.

Caught up in the racial outrage that followed the death of George Floyd, Brees was put on the spot regarding protest kneeling during the national anthem. He expressed a totally rational and reasonable position, but unfortunately for him, he did so in a cultural moment that was interested in anything but rationality and reason.

As a result, Brees was completely and utterly emasculated in the days and weeks that followed. He apologized, backtracked, apologized again, humbled himself, had his wife apologize, humiliated himself, and apologized a third time, all in a cringeworthy effort to win back street cred with cultural gatekeepers.

How bad did it get? By summer’s end, Brees was out listing off his favorite rappers. Seriously.

But most depressingly of all, the former outspoken man of high personal integrity in a National Football League that too often is known for anything but those qualities, has now been shamed into the unthinkable – celebrating and lionizing a man who sexually assaulted a woman and attempted to kidnap her children.

    The lionizing:

    The reality:

It’s a cautionary tale for everyone of every race, ethnicity, creed, and color. Choose to be a man of integrity, stand firm, and let the mob say of you what they will. The alternative is far more humiliating.
