Surge Summary: More news breaking – some of it from the New York Times (!) — which points the finger at New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s underhanded response to his state’s COVID/Nursing Home crisis.
by Gary Bauer
[Friday was] not a good day for New York Governor Andrew Cuomo. Both the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal [had] reports [Friday] that top members of his staff pressured state health officials to hide the true extent of nursing home deaths in the Empire State.
The
Times writes that Cuomo’s “extraordinary intervention” came “just as Mr. Cuomo was starting to write a book on his pandemic achievements.” Gee, I guess we can’t let the facts get in the way of a good narrative.
While some Cuomo aides have said that they hid the numbers because they were afraid that Donald Trump would demand a federal investigation, which he did, both papers note that Cuomo’s office had been fighting state health officials for months.
And the Times slammed Cuomo, declaring that the effort “reflected the lengths to which [he] has gone in the middle of a deadly pandemic to control data, brush aside public health expertise and bolster his position as a national leader in the fight against the coronavirus.”
In other words, it was all about him. He didn’t care about the people dying, often alone and blocked from seeing their loved ones, in nursing homes. He cared only about his image, and his book sales.
