Surge Summary: The Washington Post and other colluding journo outlets have been caught in a major faux-pas: manufacturing Donald Trump quotes in a previously published negative story concerning him. The Post, commendably, has issued a correction. But, whatever one’s feelings about the former president – does America really want a Mainstream Media that feels it can engage in and survive these kinds of discrediting scandals
by Gary Bauer
Two months ago, the Washington Post published a scathing “bombshell” that claimed then-President Donald Trump pressured a Georgia investigator to “find the fraud” in the election so the results could be overturned. Trump also reportedly told the investigator that she would be “a national hero” for doing so.
The Post wrote that the call “could also carry serious criminal implications.” It even quoted a former federal prosecutor who said, “Of course that’s obstruction — any way you cut it.”
There’s just one problem: A transcript of the call was recently released and Donald Trump never said any of those things. The Washington Post has since issued a correction to its original story.
But, as one columnist rightly notes, that’s
not the worst of it. Virtually every major media outlet also claimed to have “independently ‘confirmed’ the most damning details of the
Washington Post’s since-corrected ‘scoop.'”
How is it possible that six Big Media outlets all got it so wrong? Trump Derangement Syndrome is the most likely explanation.
Responding to the controversy, President Trump said this:
“You will notice that establishment media errors, omissions, mistakes, and outright lies always slant one way—against me and against Republicans. Meanwhile, stories that hurt Democrats or undermine their narratives are buried, ignored, or delayed until they can do the least harm. . .
“A strong democracy requires a fair and honest press. This latest media travesty underscores that legacy media outlets should be regarded as political entities—not journalistic enterprises. In any event, I thank the Washington Post for the correction.”
