Surge Summary: California Governor Gavin Newsom – already under fire and facing recall – bungles publicly again. Hasn’t he learned a bit more professional caution is in order if he wants to survive politically?
by Steve Pauwels
What is it about shooting themselves in the foot that so many liberal pols don’t — won’t? — “get”?
Uber-Prog governor of California Gavin Newsom is already in hot water politically — currently facing withering criticism over his hypocrisy for a November scandal involving his flouting his own COVID-19 rules, attending a lobbyist’s packed, mask-free birthday dinner at Napa Valley’s famed French Laundry restaurant while the rest of the Golden State fidgeted under a partial lockdown.
Even a Newsom-friendly CNN has
admitted: “This was an enormous misstep by Newsom, for which he offered a less than entirely convincing apology.”
This scorching faux-pas has played a not insignificant role in the current, hard-charging recall effort threatening the governor’s career prospects (over two million signatures submitted).
Should the fifty-three-year old Chief Executive be extended a merciful mulligan for what was a one-off lapse in judgement? Maybe he’s learned his lesson?
Hold on a minute! There’s this fresh wrinkle, reported by Disrn‘s Peter Heck:
With his recall election looming, California Governor Gavin Newsom has landed himself in controversy again after claiming that he was “living through Zoom school” as a parent even though his children attend an in-person private school.
Newsom’s four children … have been in-person for their schooling since November. But when appearing on CNN, the governor said …
“I’ve been a strong advocate for safely getting our kids back in person for instruction. … I have four young kids myself, I’ve been living through Zoom school and all the challenge related to it. We put out a detailed proposal to our legislature. It’s brutal.”
Heck points out the obvious: “Regardless of whether the Newsom family was utilizing Zoom for their schooling early in the pandemic, the governor’s clear implication in the statement was that they are, like a majority of California parents, still ‘living through’ the difficulty of at-home learning.”
Good grief … would it have been so arduous for the embattled Newsom to scrutinize his language, maybe tweak his verb tenses just a skoche? For clarity’s sake? How about: “I lived through Zoom school for a time.” Or: “My kids were in Zoom school last year.”
Last fall, having imposed irksome and frequently life- and/or business- and/or income- crushing restrictions on his fellow citizens, he was caught flagrante delicto defying those very restrictions. In this more recent kerfuffle, he’s apparently taking credit for being pinched by the same COVID-activated straits as everyone else — when it, turns out, he presently is not. And so the top Californian once more finds himself in red-faced explaining mode — for situations which should have been completely, easily avoidable.
At a Friday news conference,
Newsom specified of his kids, “They’ve been in and out, in and out. They had months where they were only doing Zoom school.” Had he spoken that way originally? There’d be no story here.
Taken on its own? This episode is hardly the most glaring blunder ever committed by an elected official. But you’d think one of the most recognizable political types in America — one already reeling from a still-bleeding contretemps — would be a tad more circumspect. Most folks in his ongoing pickle would steer clear of anything approaching the appearance of yet more slippery behavior.
Not, apparently, Governor Gavin Newsom.
Does the unbroken media adulation, the presumption that Leftist journos will run cover for them regardless of what they do, eventually render marquee members of the Donkey Party unable to practice occasional discernment? Even when their professional prospects are teetering? The fellow occupying Sacramento’s corner office certainly wouldn’t be the first left-leaning luminary to succumb to such blandishments.
Then again, it could simply be plain old smugness, borne out of elitist pride, that snagged him.
Or mere brain-freeze rhetorical sloppiness?
Whatever the root of this jam-up, Gavin Newsom isn’t doing himself any favors.
The months-old-but-still-stinging French Laundry embarrassment? The personal peril of a surging recall initiative? For some, these would serve as teaching moments, chastening moments enough.
Perhaps this latest foozle will turn on the light for the beleaguered Gavin Newsom.
