Surge Summary: A recommendation for author/speaker Og Mandno’s masterpiece The Greatest Salesman in the World – a work that can benefit not just salesman, but everyone who takes the time to read it.

by William A. Pauwels (w/ Steve Pauwels)

A book that greatly impacted me — and that I believe will assure your success — contains this declaration:

I will greet this day with Love in my heart, for this is the greatest secret of success in all ventures.  Muscle can split a shield and even destroy life – but only the unseen power of Love can open the hearts of men – and until I master this art I will remain no more than a peddler in the marketplace.  I will make Love my greatest weapon and none on whom I call can defend against its force.

This philosophy was taken from “The Greatest Salesman in the World” – a book by author Og Mandino.

Born in 1923 in Natick, MA, during World War II Mandino served as a bombardier, accomplishing thirty bombing missions over Germany. (He flew, in fact, with fellow pilot and movie star James Stewart!) Following his military experience, he developed an alcohol problem and had trouble keeping a job. His struggles cost him his marriage; and at one point he contemplated suicide.

In the midst of this crisis, Mandino began reading self-help and success-oriented books. He discovered W. Clement Stone’s work Success Through a Positive Mental Attitude — a message that transformed his life.

Mandino eventually became a successful and prolific writer and speaker, authoring over twenty books. The Bible supplied a significant influence on his philosophy and material. He was eventually inducted into the National Speakers Association Speaker Hall of Fame.

One of his better known apothegms is from “Scroll 1” of Greatest Salesman: “I will form good habits and become their slaves.”

In 1996, Og Mandino passed away in Antrim, NH, aged seventy-two.

Decades ago, his book The Greatest Salesman in the World was given to me by the president of Cadillac Plastics in Detroit, MI – during the early days of my business career.  He had given copies to all of his employees.  It is not just for salesmen but for working-people in every walk of life.  It has had a profound effect on me ever since I absorbed it and began following its ancient, time-proven principles.

    Other quotes from Greatest Salesman:

“You were not created for a life of idleness. You cannot eat from sunrise to sunset or drink or play or make love. Work is not your enemy but your friend. If all manners of labor were forbidden to thee you would fall to your knees and beg an early death.”

“To learn and master anything, one has to pay the price in time and concentration, until it becomes part of one’s personality and habit in living.”

“Obstacles are necessary for success because in selling, as in all careers of importance, victory comes only after many struggles and countless defeats.”

I heartily recommend this bestseller — first published in 1968 — to one and all.
