Surge Summary: The resolution of British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and the British people in the face of Nazi aggression reminds Americans today of the kind of commitment required to turn America around in this dire time.

On September 30, 1938, Czechoslovakia was sacrificed on the altar of the Munich Agreement, signed by German Chancellor Adolf Hitler, Italian Prime Minister Benito Mussolini, French Premier Edouard Daladier, and British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain.

Although the agreement was to give into Hitler’s hands only the Sudetenland, his interest was mainly economic. The pact handed over to the Nazi war machine 66% of Czechoslovakia’s coal, 70% of its iron and steel, and 70% of its electrical power. The Czech nation was left an easy target, falling shortly into Nazi domination.1

Six months after the signing of the Munich Agreement, on March 15, 1939, Nazi Germany invaded Czechoslovakia. History records the invasion as the final act leading to World War II. Another six months later, the German blitzkrieg [‘lightning-fast warfare’] stormed into Poland on September 1, 1939, despite Hitler’s guarantees and the non-aggression alliance he had signed. Britain declared war on Germany on September 3, 1939.

In 1938, hidden beneath the streets in Westminster [Central London], construction had begun on the Cabinet War Rooms [renamed Churchill War Rooms in 2010]. The basement offices were to serve as the center of Britain’s war effort against Hitler and the looming German invasion. The wartime bunker became fully operational on August 27, 1939, where leading government ministers and military strategists worked around the clock.2,3

Britain’s Prime Minister Winston Churchill [1874-1965] had a private office/bedroom next door to the Map Room, where officers of the Royal Navy, British Army, and Royal Air Force were manned 24/7. Churchill’s room included BBC broadcasting equipment where Churchill made 4 wartime broadcasts from the Cabinet War Rooms, the first being on September 11, 1940. A tiny cupboard room disguised as a private ‘loo’ provided privacy where the Prime Minister talked in secret with President Franklin Delano Roosevelt [1882-1945] using the cutting-edge technology of its day.

On September 7, 1940, the German Luftwaffe began its 8-month assault dropping high-explosive bombs and incendiary devices on London and other strategic cities across Britain. The onslaught came to be called the Blitz, after the German word blitzkrieg. All Nazi aggression was in preparation for Operation Sea Lion, the planned German amphibious invasion of Great Britain and the totalitarian domination of Europe.

The Luftwaffe’s bombardment on Britain was to weaken and force the nation to surrender, as fear, injury, death and destruction suddenly appeared, all while the nation’s husbands and fathers were away at war. Unimaginably, one in ten of the deaths during the Blitz of London from 1940 to 1941 were children.

Fortunately for the world, a few months earlier, on May 10, 1940, King George VI had asked Winston Churchill to become Prime Minister succeeding Neville Chamberlain. Having been praised as the greatest statesman of the 20th century, Churchill was not only an outstanding and effective leader, but he was also always fully prepared and had the gift to inspire.

The first weeks of Churchill’s Prime Ministership were clouded by the fall of France, the surrender of the Belgian Army, and the evacuation from Dunkirk. In a speech to the House of Commons on June 4, 1940, Churchill demonstrated his ferocity, focus, and fighting spirit: “We shall go on to the end. We shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, We shall never surrender.”

On August 16, 1945, the Imperial Japanese Forces surrendered and the Cabinet War Rooms doors were locked and left undisturbed until Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher [1925-2013] opened the historic building to the public on April 4, 1984. In a ceremony attended by Churchill family members and former Cabinet War Rooms staff, the must see Churchill War Rooms opened.

As for Adolf Hitler [1889-1945], he was not unique, for throughout history tyrants have lusted for power and subjugated nations and peoples to a life of misery; except for the favored elite. Knowing tyranny from personal experience, the American Founders set up a system of checks and balances to separate powers within a constitutional framework.

The Biblically-literate Founders recognized that natural man cannot act contrary to his corrupted nature and that freedom becomes precarious without God as the source of standards for governance. “The heart is deceitful above all things, and it is extremely sick; Who can understand it fully and know its secret motives?” [Jeremiah 17:9]

Last week former Speaker Newt Gingrich offered a dark, prescient calculation as to the state of the nation:

“I think we are drifting towards the greatest constitutional crisis since the 1850s and the rise of secession and the Civil War. I don’t mean that as hyperbole.

“If you read Andy McCarthy’s remarkable book, Ball of Collusion, he makes very clear that it is Barack Obama who corrupted the Justice Department, it is Hillary Clinton who routinely breaks the law and gets by with it, and now we have Joe Biden who has learned. He has learned from Obama that no matter what you do, if you’re a liberal Democrat, you will not be prosecuted. He learned from Hillary that a person in high public office can get millions and millions of dollars and they learned from watching Donald Trump that a true outsider, willing to take on the entire system, could destroy their entire machine.

“So what you’re seeing across the country is a desperate last ditch effort by a corrupt machine to destroy their most dangerous opponent in a way that not only breaks the constitution, [but also] destroys the rule of law, and establishes a moment of bitterness which I think will last a generation of more.

“This is going to be a horrendous period. And we just need to understand, the people who want to control America and dictate to the rest of us will break any law, lie about any topic, and manipulate the system any way they can and that includes a lot of the elite news media.” twitter.com/i/status/1691742478339125391

Psalm 94:20 foresaw that iniquity in high places will devise evil by decree.

Thankfully, and providentially, Gideons and Rahabs under the pastoral care of Jehovah have begun entering the public square. A spiritual resurrection of America is on the horizon, for they will fear nothing that breathes with mortal breath.
